Where is LT1 TDC

I recently have come across a problem, I've rebuilt my 93 Lt1 when I started it up it ran rough then it stopped then it wouldn't run again. I took the valve covers off to discover that I had bent push rods and broken rocker arms . During the rebuild I replace the cam and timing chain I placed the engine on the no#1 cylinder TDC when putting the timimg chain back on, but I was told that the engine should be on the no#6 cylinder for TDC before  putting on the timing chain. If possible can you share the light on this subject. I'm confuse  and want to make sure the engine is correctly put back together. Any help would be greatly appreciated,  Thanks.
