TPI? Does TPI stand for "Tuned Port Induction" or "Tuned Port Injection"

Yes its injection however many a mechanic has told me that tuned port injection (equal length runners) is really a sales gimmick as most/all cars have equal length intake runners. If they didnt wouldnt the power balance between cylinders/banks be different affecting drivability? Or is it called tuned because gm tuned it for power in the low end range?

TPI tuned port injection!!this manifold is an equal length runner intake.from intake valve to the throttle body is 25.4 inches. This intake was designed by GM specifically for the 305 engine ,back in 1985 gm was actually going to discontinue the 350 across the board for emissions concerns!!! the intake was to improve power and torque of the lowly 5.0 no gimmicks!!

Druski,
Your mechanics are making a mistake when they equate having equal length runners with being a tuned system. The length of the runners affects power output by taking advantage of resonance waves that build up in the system. The 3ish inch intake runners in an LT1 are optimized for high(ish) RPM output. The 21 or so inch long TPI runners are optimized for torque production up to about 4500 rpm. Thats why TPI dies at 4500. The length of the runners is tailored to the type of power curve the engineers wanted. It was tuned for low RPM torque, hence Tuned Port Injection.

Well there's more than the length of the runners of the TPI engines. Its also the curve. I have a 1990 corvette with the L-98. The runners accelerate the air going into the heads, but there is a problem. The engine diesout above 4500RPM because the runners are to small. One thing im doing to my car is geting larger runners then having them polished. Anyone doing this will notice large gains after 4500 without sacrofice in the lo end.
