i had a really bad friday the 13 about a decade ago...  it all started several weeks before.. a good customer brought in a pair of heads to the machine shop i worked at...    after waiting 2 weeks for him to bring in the gaskets and seals he called.. they were dealer items at that time.. i threw them together.. and put the sprockets back on them... there were 2 keyways in the sprockets.. i just threw them on so he would not loose the woodruff key..

a few days later he called back and said that one head had no compression..
i ask if he had checked which keyway he had used.. on each head.. .. he replied he knew what he was doing..  i said i would stop by after a parts run...   i got trapped by a train for 2 hours..  by the time i got there he had called back to the shop and gotten the owner.. .. who told him to take the head off and bring it in...     i took it back apart ... triple checked everything..  it was perfect.. he has left the sprockets off this time...  when i took the head over i showed him what the  correct keyway... a real aha moment...  until he had to drop 2 more bills for a second head gasket set..   the next day he was back on the phone to the boss.. hey.. your guy left out the cam thrust plate..  the dizzy is doing the hula.. shaking violently...  the owner went over... and said it is not a missing piece.. it is the dist.... 4 bills for a used one...  same problem...     pull the timing cover off.. and  i find the sprocket bolt is loose.. tearing up the  aluminum centered sprocket.. the woodruff key  and a bit of the cam keyway.   a quick call to the dealer found out there were no sprockets available locally . no woodruff keys.....  the cam looked like it would work...   i told them to pull the other sprocket off.. and put this worn one on that side..  and torque it .. 2 keyways remember..   i went off in search of a replacement 3/16 X 3/4" half moon woodruff key...  all of my normal engine parts suppliers did not have that size..  the cam grinder had a single  cam core for that engine..and after  a bit of begging.. and a bribe it was mine... i put it in my  tee shirt pocket.. and drove back..   as i got there.. and pulled up with a huge smile on my face.. i reached into my tee shirt pocket.. and found only the tiny hole that lived there. talk about an empty feeling.. i sped back to the cam grinder.. only to see someone pickup something  from the parking lot and drive away...  we searched and searched for 20 minutes...  the only stack left was in the deep back room and was only old 223 ford cams..    guess what.. that was it.... 40 or 50 of them...

i got 2...     took them to the tech...  and then found out it was friday the 13...

that was one to remember..
