I need your help in finding the exact type of transmission for my 1986 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. Is there any way to find it in the VIN number?
Thanks.

they only put 440T4's in those... later ones were known as 4T60E's
it is probably too late... but that is what they put in...
and for every body else. who gets to read this outdated post...
there are lots of different gear and chain combos for these... as they came behind 4 bangers, 6's and front wheel drive V8's think northstar and the olds variant...
these are also the high stall converter cores... there must be 50 or more different stall combos...
i don't remember how many final drive combos there were... so you could make a high stall, low geared tranny for drag racing.. or a medium stall tall geared unit for crusing... so many options... calculate carefully.. to get your 4th gear with the tcc locked engine speed at freeway speed proper...
what ever you *** don't peal the label off the converter... it would be like watching a car race... with all the cars painted the same numbers and no numbers...
early 440t4's and the 3 speed 125C's had a weird problem that would crop up once in a while...
they would stall the motor when coming to the corner... sometimes they would stall the motor when you pulled it out of park.... wham.. its dead... almost like you did not push the clutch in... but this is an automatic... the torque converter clutch solenoids and pressure switches go bad... and they also get trash in them.... swap them out ... the side cover on the 440t4's is a lot harder to get off than the 125c but is not impossible..
the pressure switch grounds the circuit.. on some apps...
