I know you can get a small gain of HP from a cold air intake and exhaust system. I've also heard of people swapping out their cam's with a Z06 cam. I don't know if the cams are a straight swap or not as I've only ever heard people talk about it. What's the benefit in putting a throttle body and spacer in?

A throttle body would definitely pick up a few ponies, but I'd have to agree that a camshaft would be a better investment. A used LS2 or LS6 cam and valvesprings would be a substantial improvement and fairly economical. The 5.3L comes with a tiny 190/191 duration cam, the LS2 comes with 207/217 and the LS6 has 204/218 with more lift too.
