howdy all. I have a 5.3 motor in my 2004 chevy ext cab 2wd truck. I have doug thorley headers and a flow master exhaust. I have a chip in it as well as a free flow air filter. it has 135000 miles on it and ( knock on wood) runs great. When should I think about rebuilding it. would it be better to do it now while its running great or wait until it stops running? I also want to know what you think about rebuild vs rebuilt? Is there such a thing as a new motors you can buy and how much am I looking at cost wise? what would be best? IYHO. thanks. L.

run it till it dies IMO. you can buy a crate motor from gm, 5.3 L with 325 hp from the factory without your bolt ons, they run around 3 to 4 grand from what ive been told. and your truck will last with how it is maintained. i know of 5.3l lasting till 300k, some just last to 200k. depends on how well you take car of it, oil changes, etc... expect your tranny do die long before the motor.

Absolutley don't do anything other then the maintainence items. Run it until it tells you when to rebuild. Believe me I've seen them with 350,000 hard miles before they show any signs of needing a rebuild.Good Luck......

Thanks for the replys. I have used synthetic from day one and it still runs tight so I will wait and save for the time it stops. I keep a keen eye on it and have to admit I love chevys!
